People Who Need People

Writer: Stephanie ThomasStephanie Thomas

The song "People" was written for the 1964 Broadway musical Funny Girl starring Barbra Streisand. The lyrics assert that "people who need people" that is, people who love others and are not emotionally cut off from them — are the "luckiest people in the world".

To that assertion I respond with two simple words: true 'dat.

As a parent to a child with complex special needs, the last 13 years of my life have been chock full of a sometimes dizzying array of care providers. Doctors, specialists, respite workers, teachers, therapists, bus drivers, aides, special education assistants, and more. At times it felt like a constant intrusion, especially when multiple people came into my home on multiple days in a week. And at other times, keeping all of their appointments, schedules, and services organized was completely overwhelming. Don't get me wrong, I was always grateful for the expertise and support, but it's hard to always have to rely on others for so much.

Having said all that, as I reflect on the individuals who have come into my life as a direct result of Greta's diagnoses, I feel very lucky. People with energy and ideas; people with boundless generosity of spirit; people who care; people who want to help. By opening up my home, my heart, my family, I have gained so much.

I was — and still am — someone who needs these people. And I am forever grateful for the variety of skills, support, and friendship they've brought into my life. I think Barbra got it right when she crooned, "People who need people are the luckiest people in the world."
