Greta LOVES emergency vehicles and workers. So much so that when she's home for a visit and gets "stuck", we've been known to tell her there's a car accident on the route from our house to hers, or we'll say we heard a siren. That usually gets her rushing out the door so she can look for the fire trucks, police cars, and ambulances. A little macabre, I know, but sometimes you just do wha'cha gotta do to get through the day!
One Sunday last month, daddy was preparing her to go back to Huntington House and Greta was having a tough time transitioning. We tried a few strategies without any success when, "luckily", the radio reported an accident on the route to her house. When Greta heard that, she quickly complied, got her shoes on, and ran out to the car telling daddy to hurry up.
About 20 minutes later, I received this text from daddy:
We got to see the accident. In fact it closed the ramp to Beddington Tr. so she loved that. Then when we got to her street there was a fire engine and a supervisor outside her house, the side mirror on Julie's* car was broken, and the front bumper was torn off. Apparently they were responding to an emergency next door and the fire truck sideswiped the car. Greta was over the moon.
Telling this story makes me laugh every time, and Greta still talks about the excitement of that drive home! Thank goodness that every once in a while, the single-mindedness of the PWS brain can work in your favour.
*"Julie" is one of the staff at Huntington House. Her name has been changed for this story.
